Experienced executive legal leadership, sized to fit your stage of growth.
I am Simon Krauss, a General Counsel with over 30 years experience in U.S. and international commercial law, including over 20 years as in-house counsel. I now bring my skills and experience to growing and mature companies as a fractional or outside General Counsel: without the overhead of a full-time hire or the expense of using a traditional law firm.
I build legal departments from the ground up
I've started legal functions from scratch three times. As Wavelynx Technologies' first General Counsel, I cut contract turnaround time in half by designing in-house processes and AI-assisted workflows, and managed legal matters across sales, HR, engineering, and security. At Kyrio, I led the company's spin-off from its parent, CableLabs, founded its legal department, and helped take it from startup to a mature, multi-market business. I also served as General Counsel for SCTE, where I provided timely legal advice from the board of directors to those implementing SCTE’s strategy. I can work as the sole General Counsel or with in-house legal teams.
Cybersecurity and privacy, from the inside
I'm a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and my legal work includes working directly with cybersecurity teams. I led multi-year negotiations with the FBI to negotiate industry compliance with lawful surveillance requirements while preserving user privacy, and I helped co-create one of the world's largest public cybersecurity infrastructures. I'm a named inventor on four cybersecurity patents, and at Wavelynx, in addition to working with its product security, I oversaw the IP program that doubled the company's patent filings. My experience also includes working with GDPR as well as state privacy requirements.
Global commercial deals and corporate structure
I've negotiated complex domestic and international commercial, SaaS, product sales, and licensing agreements across the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Asia, and have guided mergers, acquisitions, and subsidiary formations — including standing up, and later dissolving, entities in Taiwan, China, and Hong Kong. I've managed corporate governance for private equity-owned, multi-tiered organizations, led trademark prosecution (with wins before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board), and negotiated trademark co-existence agreements.
How I work
I focus on practical, business-minded answers over legal complexity for its own sake. I'm equally comfortable advising engineering and security teams, briefing executive teams and boards, or negotiating with federal regulators — and I aim to give you the speed and judgment of in-house counsel at a fraction of the cost.
